...Unless it wears one of you.

...until they met.

Purgatory A Place Down Under Book 1 eBook Susan Stec Rainy Kaye

I've been excited to read this book from Susan Stec for a while, and once I had the time to do so, I was not disappointed! Susan brings something Fresh, New, and EXCITING to the paranormal genre with this Doppleganger story--and it's NOT what you think! (But don't worry, I won't spoil it for you). Anyway, this story is about a beautiful (because that's who she chooses to "wear") doppleganger who is outright dangerous. Which makes the point of view of this story unique, as in some ways, it's a "bad guys" POV, right? However, as you read the story, you find it's more fascinating than antu-sympathetic, regardless of the absent emotions of the main "character" and, further, the story challenges where the doppleganger can, in fact, feel something after all. Something like...love. This ends up being quite the "anti-hero" romance as even the romantic interest (a hideous Wendigo that devours flesh) is a not-so-nice type of paranormal being. But is what they feel for each other as hideous and evil as they are? For two beings that tend to make a life out of consuming the livers of others, they are sure worried about destroying each other. All in all, you will enjoy a story about these preternatural beings that are faced, unexpectedly, with some very human feelings. This is a love story with an edge, though beware the graphic scenes may be a bit jarring for the weak of heart. The dark comedy, however, will serve to lighten the mood. Susan Stec fans will not be disappointed!

Purgatory A Place Down Under Book 1 eBook Susan Stec Rainy Kaye Reviews

Original story, fun characters. One of my most favorite books, ever.
Stec offers us a sexy, edgy story in which underworld outcasts find in each other something they never knew possible for their kind - love. I enjoyed being introduced to some new critters like Wendigos and Dopplegangers – which brought a fresh twist to the paranormal romance scene. Stec delivers with this fast-paced, steamy adventure!
I love Susan Stec's books. There is always a new twist to everything she writes and this book has that in spades. If you love paranormal with snark and some humor you need to read this book.
Read this in the Secret Worlds anthology. The story idea was interesting with unique characters. The writing suffered from unnecessary redundancy and plot shifts that made no sense. There were many many times when I would have to re-read a section because the story didn't seem to be making sense. There were great bones in this work but much like the characters in the story, it kept shifting into messy forms. I was very close to a DNF here. This is the first work I've read by this author so I hope that her style solidifies and that a seasoned editor works with her to hone the craft. The ideas in the tale were what kept me reading when the technical craft was so lacking.
In Purgatory writer Susan Stec challenges the norm in horror. By that I mean she doesn’t have a pack of werewolves fighting a vampire brood. In Purgatory she brings to life an old and mysterious creature we call Doppelganger. That word originated with the Germans to describe something that is a look-alike for something else and so we discover the heroine of Susan’s latest book. Whether she is “wearing” Cece, Grace or Jane, this female Doppelganger is both gorgeous and deadly. She takes and uses anyone for as long as it amuses her then casts off that person for another. Unfortunately, this sometimes is fatal for the human, but a Doppelganger doesn’t care. She don't have human emotions. Or does she? Can a creature that is little more than a wisp of smoke assume a woman’s physical appearance and also assume her human feelings, like love? Or is it just desire?
The co-star in Susan’s story is another seldom heard of creature called a Wendigo. What is a Wendigo you ask? It is a mythical creature feared in Native American lore that devoured flesh and was so hideous that the strongest braves would turn tail and run. When the half-human breed Wendigo, called Gaire, hooks up with the beautiful Cece possessed by the Doppelganger, sparks start to fly. As Cece, she falls hard for Gaire, and he wants her, but both are afraid their true nature will destroy each other. Visit the underworld called Purgatory and follow these living demons as they seek each other to satisfy their human emotions.
I found the story of these creatures search for each other and true love filled with edge-of-the-seat suspense. The tension is broken by violent, graphic mayhem as only Susan Stec can describe. She is one of my favorite writers and has here a real crowd-pleaser told in her unique style. A must read for everyone who loves a tale that has you laughing one second then shocked in horror the next. C. Lee Brown
Good book! I loved that it was unique and not a typical paranormal story. Susan delivers a nice paced tale with well developed characters, and an interesting plot. I look forward to more of your books!
The story is a page turner with engaging and compelling characters. The two main characters are unusual even in paranormal fiction, which adds both interest and a fresh feel to this book.
